The Eastport-South Manor Jr.-Sr. High School Introduction to Science Research class participated in the 2022 Day in the Life of a River program at Calverton’s Peconic River in October. The district’s students were among hundreds of student-researchers from more than a dozen schools who gathered at various places along the Peconic River system to measure water quality, biodiversity and the physical characteristics of the river system.
After results were collected, the students submitted the data, which is then used by stakeholders for planning and for making decisions regarding the river and the impacts of humans on Long Island’s environment. The student-researchers also collected aquatic macroinvertebrate samples for a DNA barcoding analysis of biodiversity.
Advanced Placement Biology and science research teacher Robert Bolen said that district students have participated in this program for the past decade, making them stewards of the local environment.
